ATP Rising Stars...STEFANOS TSITSIPAS (GRE)

The rising stars of the ATP World Tour are ready for 2018 season. In the group of excellent tennis player, which has a bright future, the young tennis player from Greece Stefanos Tsitsipas stands out.

JUNIOR CAREER:

Followed by his father Apostolos, Tsitsipas played all around Europe in U12 and U14 categories and finally, the first junior tournament he played in Morocco in 2013. At the first tournament, Stefanos comes to QF where he loses from Dennis Uspensky (USA) in two sets 4-6,6-7. 

Next week, Stefanos performs at Mediterranee Avenir (G1), Having passed the qualifications and greatly played the first two rounds, Stefanos was defeated in the third round by Spanish tennis player Calvo Eman in two sets of 3-6,4-6. Stefanos played the first finals in the junior competition in August 2013 in the French city of Clermont, after 4 great victories Stefanos was nevertheless defeated by domestic tennis player Alexis Gautier in two sets of 3-6,6-7. By the end of 2013, Stefanos recorded his performance at the prestigious Eddie Herr tournament where he was defeated in the first round.

At the start of 2014, Stefanos will play two European tournaments in Slovakia and Czech Republic where he has won two victories. With solid results he continued throughout February and March, so in April in the Beaulieu Sur Mer tournament in France, Stefanos made his place in the quarter-finals of the tournament where he was defeated by excellent American tennis player Dennis Uspensky after a big fight in three sets. After a few good results during the summer, Stefanos in the beginning of September in the Montreal tournament, reached the semifinals where he was defeated by another excellent junior from Korea Yunseong Chung, in another great match in three sets 4-6,6-2,3-6 . The first major results in his junior career, Stefanos makes at the end of 2014 at very prestigious tournaments Eddie Herr and Metropolia Orange Bowl International Championships. At the first tournament, Eddie Herr, Stefanos arrives at the quarter-finals. In the quarter-finals, he loses from Michael Mmoh (USA) 6-4,1-6,2-6. Nevertheless, the biggest result in the previous career, Stefanos is on the Orange Bowl, where after a brilliant 5 games and a victory over players such as Tommy Paul, Taylor Fritz, Andrey Rublev comes to a final match and a match with Stefan Kozlov (USA). In an exceptionally well-attended and tennis-friendly match for that age, Stefanos was defeated after a great fight of 6-2,3-6,2-6.

With excellent results at the end of 2014, Stefanos enabled himself to play in strong junior tournaments. At the beginning of 2015 on a tour of Australia, Stefanos on two tournaments reach the quarter-finals. During the summer of the same year, Stefanos also played semifinal European Junior Championships where he was defeated by young Spanish tennis player Zapata Miralles in three sets of 6-3,2-6,6-7. At the end of 2015, as well as the previous one, Stefanos records his greatest successes on the American tour, in the tournaments of Orange Bowl and Eddie Herr. On both tournaments, Stefanos reached the finals where both teams were defeated by Felix Auger Aliassime and Miomir Kecmanovic (SRB). 

The excellent end of 2015 enabled him to maintain his form at the beginning of 2016 where he played G1 semifinals in Traralgon, Australia. In semifinal match, Stefanos lost to Ulises Blanch (USA) in three sets 6-3,2-6,3-6. The first major tournament he won was the prestigious 57 Trofeo Bonfiglio, in the finals of the 57-way tournament in Milan, Stefanos defeated Ulises Blanch (USA) 6-4,6-3 and thus revised him for defeat in the tournament in Australia.

By the end of his excellent junior career, Stefanos wins the 2016 European Junior Championships in Klosters, Switzerland. In the final of the tournament, Stefanos beat young French tennis player Corentin Moutet in two sets. The last junior tournament was played at the US Open where he reached the semifinals, in a semifinal match defeated by Felix Auger Aliassime (CAN) 4-6,5-7. Nevertheless, despite defeats, Stefanos had an excellent junior career where he came to first place at the Junior Rankings. Excellent junior outcomes will help him to make a breakthrough in senior competition with the experience gained.


SENIOR CAREER: 

With the first senior tournaments, Stefanos started in 2013, played 6 futures in Greece, where he also reached the first point for the ATP Rankings. And in 2014, Stefanos continues to play a futures tournament, but without much success and with just 3 points won. However, this experience in senior competition will mean it for the results that will be achieved over the coming years.

During 2015, Stefanos celebrates his first appearance on the ATP challenger tour in order to reach the first significant result in the senior competition at the end of 2015 when he entered the final of the F9 Futures tournament in Heraklion, Greece. In the final of the tournament, Stefanos was defeated by Steven Diez (CAN) 2-6,0-6. Stefanos wins his first futures tournament the same year, in Cyprus. In the final, Stefanos beat Belgian tennis player Alexandre Folie 2-6,6-4,6-2.

2016:

In the first three months of 2016, Stefanos made appearances at the ATP Challenger tournaments in Europe and Australia in order to win new futures in April in Italy. In May, Stefanos won two other futures tournaments in Italy in Santa Margherita Di Pula and Lecco.

After well-played tournaments during the summer, Stefanos wins the futures tournament in Portugal in the fall. The first major success in his senior career, Stefanos records the Mohammedia Challenger where he reached the final. In the final match, Stefanos was defeated in three sets by Gerald Melzer 6-3,3-6,2-6 after a great fight. Already next week, Stefanos plays another final at ATP Challenger in Casablanca, Morroco. In the final, Stefanos lost to Maxime Janvier (FRA) 4-6,0-6.

2017: 

As usual, Stefanos started a tour in Australia in 2017. Already in the first week of the new year, Stefanos played at Noumea Challenger, in the first round he defeated Guilherme Clezar (BRA), but in the second round he lost to Tristan Lamasine (FRA) 4-6,3-6. After failing to qualify for the Australian Open, Stefanos linked several defeats to the Challenger tournaments in France and then defeated ATP tournaments in Sofia, Rotterdam, Marseille. After a series of defeats, Stefanos makes a decision to return to the futures tournament where he records several solid results. The first appearance in the main Grand Slam tournament, Stefanos records Rolland Garros. After qualifying, Stefanos met in the first round with an excellent server, Ivo Karlovic (CRO). After a great fight in all three sets, Stefanos was defeated 6-7,5-7,4-6.

After Rolland Garros, Stefanos also performed in Wimbledon's main draw. In the first round, after qualifying, Stefanos met with Dusan Lajovic, a good tennis player from Serbia, but slightly defeated in three sets 4-6,4-6,4-6

After Wimbledon, Stefanos appeared on several ATP Challenger, but after failing to qualify for the US Open, Stefanos won the first ATP Challenger in Genoa, Italy. Stefanos defeated Guido Andreozzi in two sets in the first round of the tournament in Genoa. In the second round, Stefanos defeated Aldin Setkic (BiH) to win the next two rivals Struff (GER) and Fucsovics (HUN) without a lost set. In the finals of the tournament, after a splendid two set, Stefanos defeated Garcia Lopez (ESP) 7-5,7-6. 

The first major success at the ATP tournaments, Stefanos recorded in the end of the competition in 2017. At the ATP tournament in Antwerp, Belgium, Stefanos reached the semifinals where he was defeated by Diego Schwartzman (ARG) 3-6,5-7. In the same tournament, Stefanos recorded victories over Pablo Cuevas, Ivo Karlovic, David Goffin. At the end of 2017, Stefanos reached the Brest Challenger final where he was defeated by Corentin Moutet (FRA) 2-6,6-7 and ended his performance in 2017.

At the beginning of 2018, Stefanos performed in Doha and Auckland. At the first tournament in Doha, Qatar, Stefanos beat Florian Mayer and Richard Gasquet, but in the quarter-finals defeated by great Austrian tennis player Dominic Thiem 5-7.4-6. In Auckland, Stefanos was defeated already in the first round by Lukas Lacko (SVK) 3-6,7-6,3-6.

In the first round of the first Grand Slam in the season, Tsitsipas will meet with another great hope of world tennis, the young tennis player from Canada, Denis Shapovalov. This will be one of the best duels in the first round of the Australian Open, our advice is not to miss it.
