Next Gen ATP Finals We present...CHUNG HYEON (KOR)

When we talk about young talents, it is certain that we can not skip Hyeon Chung, a young Korean tennis player. Hyeon is another young player in the series who is very talented and who has already shown that he expects great results in his career.

Hyeon was born in Suwon, South Korea where he currently lives. He was born on 19th May 1996. His Career High Singles Ranking is 44 on 11 September 2017. 



JUNIOR CAREER: 


On junior ITF tournaments, Hyeon appeared in mid-2010, where he played 3 home tournaments, he was partly successful. At the first tournament he played in KangWon-Do, he passed the qualifications but was defeated in the first round of his compatriot Kim, Ho Gak in three sets after a great fight of 3-6,7-6,5-7. In the other two tournaments in the same year, he failed to record the win but showed a fine game and showed his full potential.

In 2011, the first tournament he played in Mexico was at X Abierto Internacional Juvenil Casablanca San Angel (G4) tournament in Mexico City. He made three victories and collects the first major points for the itf junior list. He was defeated in the quarter-finals by  Murra, Juan Pablo 4-6,4-6. During February, he played another tournament in Mexico, Jalisco Junior Cup 2011 (G4), lost to Mate Cutura (CRO) 1-6,6-7 in the third round. During March 2011, Hyeon was preparing for Korea for the next tournaments and a major breakthrough on ITF junior rankings. The first junior tournament final, Hyeon played in June 2011 in Gimcheon City at the Gimcheon International Junior Championships (G5). He played 4 excellent matches but was defeated by Kim, Ho Gak (KOR) 6-1,3-6,0-6 in the final after a great fight.

Next week he came to the semifinals of the G5 tournament in Korea, Sunchang International Championships. Hyeon was defeated in two sets of Kang, Hogi 5-7,1-6. In October 2011, Hyeon played another final (G5) on the home court. In the final, he was defeated by Son, Ji Hoon 1-6, 1-6. By the end of the year, Hyeon played two more tournaments but no major results.

Hyeon will make the greatest progress in his junior career in 2013, which he started with great results, winning two titles at the G3 and G2 tournaments in India. Among others, he managed to win the young Spanish tennis player Albert, Alcaraz Ivorra in the final.

His first appearance at the Junior Grand Slam Tournament, Hyeon was at Rolland Garros in 2012. Hyeon played two great matches in qualifying and then in the first round managed to beat great Serbian tennis player Nikola Milojevic 6-2,6-3 but in the second round he still had to leave the field first, losing to Spencer Papa (USA).

The first big points, Hyeon won the G1 Tournament in Offenbach, Germany. He played 6 excellent matches and in the final beat Mateo Nicolas, Martinez (ARG) after two sets 6-3,6-4.

By the end of 2012, Hyeon also performed at the US Open Junior Tennis Championships, Junior Davis Cup where he won 7th place. At the end of the year, Hyeon won the G2 tournament in his home country and played another semifinals at the G1 Tournament in Korea.

During 2013, Hyeon played at the Australian Open Junior Championships where he lost in the third round of Borna Coric (CRO) 6-7,4-6. He recorded the greatest success in his junior career at Wimbledon where he played the finals. During the tournament, he managed to win several excellent players, including Nick Kyrgios (AUS) 6-2,6-2, Borna Coric (CRO) 7-6,6-3, Maximilian Marterer (GER) 6-7,6-1,6-3. In the final, Hyeon played a great match and gave excellent resistance to the Italian young star Gianluigi Quinzi, but was defeated in two sets 5-7,6-7.

By the end of a great junior career, Hyeon performed in two Grand Slam Junior tournaments, but he did not record some major results. Parallel to junior tournaments, Hyeon began to perform on the itf futures tournaments.


SENIOR CAREER:

The first ITF futures tournament, Hyeon played at 16, in July 2012 but was defeated in the third round of qualifications. During 2012, he won the WC for the Seoul Challenger, came to the second round and the first points for the ATP list. By the end of 2012, Hyeon had played several futures but only once managed to reach the semifinals.

In late April and early May 2013, Hyeon played two tournaments in Seoul and managed to reach the semifinals and the first itf futures final. In the final of the second tournament, he was defeated by Daniel Nguyen (USA) 6-4,5-7,4-6. The first fjucers, Hyeon won in June 2013 when he was 17 years old. In the final, Hyeon defeated Enrique, Lopez-Perez 6-2,6-3. In September 2013, Hyeon got a WC to play at the ATP tournament in Kuala Lumpur, he offered great resistance but was defeated in the first round by Federico Delbonis 4-6,2-6.

New futures title, Hyeon won in February 2014 in the tournament in Nonthaburi, Thailand where Nam, Ji Sung defeated 6-2,7-6 in the final. The new success Hyeon made after three weeks, he won another futures in Thailand to play by the end of March and another futures final, but this time Hyeon was defeated.

At Busan Challenger, Hyeon comes to a semi-finals where he loses from Jimmy Wang (TPE) 6-4,4-6,0-6. Hyeon's excellent results continued with winning another futures tournament in Korea. During 2014, Hyeon first performed in the US Open, where he was defeated in the second round of qualifications.


The first ATP Challenger title, Hyeon won in Bangkok, Thailand. He played a perfect tournament and won some great players to the finals (Udomchoke (THA), Huang (TPE), Soeda (JPN)). In the final, Hyeon beat Jordan Thompson (AUS) 7-6,6-4Due to great results, Hyeon received a call to perform at the Davis Cup against the Chinese Taipei, although he also debuted in April 2014 against India.

At the beginning of 2015, Hyeon took part in the Australian Open qualifications where he was defeated in the third round. The new ATP challenger title, Hyeon wins at the start of February in Australia at the Burnie Challenger. In the final, Hyeon beat Alex Bolt (AUS) 6-2,7-5. Next week, Hyeon played another finale challenger but was defeated by Bjorn Fratangelo (USA). The first appearance on major tournaments, Hyeon heads to Miami where the tournament organizer gets WC. In the first round Hyeon defeated Marcel Granollers (ESP) but was defeated in the second by Tomas Berdych (CZE) 3-6,4-6.

The first ATP victory in the main draw, Hyeon says at ATP Houston where he defeated Facundo Arguello (ARG) 6-3,7-5. In the same tournament, in the second round he was defeated by Fernando Verdasco (ESP). By the end of spring 2015, Hyeon wins two other challenger titles in Savannah, Georgia and Busan, Korea. During the summer, Hyeon did not achieve great results, but returned to the Kaoshinung Challenger winner at the end of September, where Hyeon defeated Yuki Bhambri (IND) 7-5,6-4 in the final.

Throughout 2016, Hyeon was followed by ups and downs, during the first half of the year, Hyeon lost in the first round to a number of ATP tournaments. The better form of Hyeon was achieved only in September 2016 when he managed to defend the title of Kaoshinung Challenger, in the final defeated Duckhee Lee 6-4,6-2. By the end of 2016, Hyeon won another ATP Challenger in Kobe, Japan where Hyeon defeated James Duckworth (AUS) in two sets 6-4,7-6.


2017:

In 2016, Hyeon finished in 106th place at the ATP Rankings in singles and 221 in doubles. In 2017, Hyeon began the ATP tournament in Chennai, India where he lost in the second round of tennis from Israel, Dudi Sela. At the Australian Open, Hyeon reached the second round in order to win the second ATP Challenger title in Maui, HI, USA in the second week of the Grand-Slam Tournament.

By the middle of the spring, Hyeon recorded a few bad results to raise the form in the clay season. On the tournament in Barcelona, ​​Hyeon played several great matches, and Alexander Zverev (GER) managed to win, but was defeated by Rafael Nadal (ESP) in the semifinals in two sets, even though he offered excellent resistance.
On the second Grand Slam in the season, Rolland Garros Hyeon are reaching the third round, managed to beat Sam Querrey and Denis Istomin but in the third round defeated by excellent Kei Nishikori (JPN) after a big fight in 5 sets.

After the US Open, Hyeon appeared in the Davis Cup against the Chinese Taipei. He won both matches to win victories against solid tennis players, Wu, Ting-Lin and Yu, Cheng-Yu. By the end of the 2017 competition year, Hyeon played four more tournaments and recorded a single win on each.

Solid 2017, Hyeon crowned the 2017 Next Generation ATP Finals winning the finals Andrey Rublev (RUS) 3-4,4-3,4-2,4-2. With this title, Hyeon will finish in 2017 at 59th place at the ATP Singles Rankings.


Hyeon Chung's results during the first couple of years of senior career show that we will see Hyeon in ATP TOP 20 for a year already.
